Okinawa Prefecture, in 2010, signed the “Memorandum of Cooperation Regarding the Hawai'i Okinawa Partnership on Clean and Efficient Energy Development and Deployment” (renewed in 2015, completed in 2020) which was also signed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the State of Hawai’i. Based on the background of the cooperative relationship and the history of exchanges between the State of Hawai’i and Okinawa Prefecture, in May 2021, the State of Hawai’i and Okinawa Prefecture signed the “Memorandum of Cooperation Regarding the Hawai’i Okinawa Partnership on Clean Energy” and will work together to realize sustainable island societies. ~Okinawa Prefecture HP.

    Alan M. Oshima - State of Hawai'i

    Economic and Community Navigator

    Alan M. Oshima retired from Hawaiian Electric Company after serving for five years as the president and chief executive officer.

    Under Alan’s leadership, Hawaiian Electric accelerated its company-wide transformation initiative, reorganized its processes to become more nimble, innovative and customer focused and built an employee culture that readily adapts to change. Hawaiian Electric has been nationally recognized for its progress in replacing fossil fuel generation with renewable resources. The Smart Electric Power Alliance named Hawaiian Electric its Investor-Owned Utility of the Year in 2018 and in 2019, the company was named Utility of the Year by the independent trade publication Utility Dive.

    Alan practiced law prior to 2005 and was involved in numerous high-profile cases involving water rights, land use and all aspects of public utility regulation and was recognized by his peers for his accomplishments.

    Service to the community has been a hallmark of Alan’s career. He has been recognized by numerous professional and community organizations for his leadership and volunteerism, especially his work to improve public education. He has served in varied leadership capacities with among others: the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs, the YMCA of Honolulu, Hawaii3Rs and the Hawaii State Bar Association.

    In 2020, Governor David Y. Ige asked Alan to volunteer as the Economic and Community Navigator during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Working with many stakeholders, a plan for addressing the various phases of the stress imposed by the worldwide crisis was put into place which includes a unique Safe Travels program that launched on October 15, 2020.

    Alan and Jo Ann Oshima live in the Nuuanu neighborhood of Honolulu. Their family includes a daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren in Honolulu and a son and daughter-in-law and one granddaughter in San Francisco.

    A graduate of Farrington High School in Honolulu, Alan received a degree in business administration from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, California. He served as a Supply Corps officer with the U.S. Navy and, among other places, was stationed at Pearl Harbor and San Diego.

Information

The workshop secretariat is saddend to hear and report that William "Billy" Kenoi, former Hawaii County Mayor, passed on January 26 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mayor Kenoi was an early and strong supporter of these annual workshops, and we can say with certainty this event would not have been possible with out him. We wish his friends and family our condolence as they and we say Aloha.
